A 1930s WPA (Works Progress Administration) poster promoting national parks depicts Native Americans overlooking the land with the tag line “his hunting ground of yesterday”.

The hand lettering of that text is reminiscent of Futura Black and similar Art Deco stencil-influenced type designs, but is rendered in an oblique lower case with no capitals.

Re-drawn as Sandwich Shop JNL, the typeface is now available in both regular (vertical) and oblique versions.

The cover of the 1938 sheet music for “Treasure Island March” had its title hand lettered in a rough-hewn Western style with overtones of Art Deco influence.

All of the characters were “cleaned up” for the digital font, but still retain the basic designs with their irregular, eccentric look.

The result is Western Deco JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions.

Originally designed during the TipoBrda Workshop in Slovenia. Resistenza spent 2 years developing this 2 style (roman & Italic), 20 weight family. The subtle reverse contrast characters were first painted with a flat brush, then polished in pencil on tracing paper before being carefully digitised, to include language support and all the opentype features you expect in a quality contemporary font.
